Honoring Ross Andrew McGinnis

Army Pfc. Ross McGinnis, 19, saved four other soldiers in his Humvee.

Private First Class Ross Andrew McGinnis

Private First Class Ross Andrew McGinnis received the Medal of Honor posthumously this morning in the East Room of the White House. In a more perfect world, PFC McGinnis would be a household name.

Below are some of President Bush’s moving remarks from today’s ceremony:

A week ago on Memorial Day, the flag of the United States flew in half-staff in tribute to those who fell in service to our country. Today we pay special homage to one of those heroes: Private First Class Ross Andrew McGinnis of the U.S. Army. Private McGinnis died in a combat zone in Iraq on December the 4th, 2006 –- and for his heroism that day, he now receives the Medal of Honor…

The Medal of Honor is the nation's highest military distinction. It's given for valor beyond anything that duty could require, or a superior could command. By long tradition, it's presented by the President. For any President, doing so is a high privilege.

Before he entered our country's history, Ross McGinnis came of age in the town of Knox, Pennsylvania. Back home they remember a slender boy with a big heart and a carefree spirit. He was a regular guy. He loved playing basketball. He loved working on cars. He wasn't too wild about schoolwork. (Laughter.) He had a lot of friends and a great sense of humor. In high school and in the Army, Ross became known for his ability to do impersonations. A buddy from boot camp said that Ross was the only man there who could make the drill sergeant laugh. (Laughter.)

Most of all, those who knew Ross McGinnis recall him as a dependable friend and a really good guy. If Ross was your buddy and you needed help or you got in trouble, he'd stick with you and be the one you could count on. One of his friends told a reporter that Ross was the type "who would do anything for anybody."

That element of his character was to make all the difference when Ross McGinnis became a soldier in the Army. One afternoon 18 months ago, Private McGinnis was part of a humvee patrol in a neighborhood of Baghdad. From his position in the gun turret, he noticed a grenade thrown directly at the vehicle. In an instant, the grenade dropped through the gunner's hatch. He shouted a warning to the four men inside. Confined in that tiny space, the soldiers had no chance of escaping the explosion. Private McGinnis could have easily jumped from the humvee and saved himself. Instead he dropped inside, put himself against the grenade, and absorbed the blast with his own body.

By that split-second decision, Private McGinnis lost his own life, and he saved his comrades. One of them was Platoon Sergeant Cedric Thomas, who said this: "He had time to jump out of the truck. He chose not to. He's a hero. He was just an awesome guy." For his actions, Private McGinnis received the Silver Star, a posthumous promotion in rank, and a swift nomination for the Medal of Honor. But it wasn't acclaim or credit that motivated him. Ross's dad has said, "I know medals never crossed his mind. He was always about friendships and relationships. He just took that to the ultimate this time."

When Ross McGinnis was in kindergarten, the teacher asked him to draw a picture of what he wanted to be when he grew up. He drew a soldier. Today our nation recognizing -- recognizes him as a soldier, and more than that –- because he did far more than his duty. In the words of one of our commanding generals, "Four men are alive because this soldier embodied our Army values and gave his life."

The day will come when the mission he served has been completed and the fighting is over, and freedom and security have prevailed. America will never forget those who came forward to bear the battle. America will always honor the name of this brave soldier who gave all for his country, and was taken to rest at age 19.

No one outside this man's family can know the true weight of their loss. But in words spoken long ago, we are told how to measure the kind of devotion that Ross McGinnis showed on his last day: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

Gospel also gives this assurance: "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted." May the deep respect of our whole nation be a comfort to the family of this fallen soldier. May God always watch over the country he served, and keep us ever grateful for the life of Ross Andrew McGinnis.

Obama’s Newest Pastor Problem

By Jacob Laksin
FrontPageMagazine.com | Monday, June 02, 2008

Visiting Chicago’s St. Sabina parish this March, it was impossible to quell the suspicion that the resident pastor, firebrand activist Rev. Michael Pfleger, was bound to spell trouble for Barack Obama.

Immediately striking were the parallels between Pfleger and Obama’s soon-to-be ex-spiritual advisor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Like Wright, Pfleger enjoyed a friendship with the candidate stretching back twenty years. Like Wright, too, he was an unreconstructed political radical, preaching an abrasively Afro-centrist gospel of oppression that takes white “racism” as a powerful and pervasive fact of American life – a liturgical bent all the more noticeable for the fact that Pfleger, while ministering to an overwhelmingly black congregation, is himself white. It was only a matter of time, surely, before Pfleger’s penchant for off-the-cuff ad hominem – he dedicated one Good Friday service to waxing apoplectic about “the stupid people” in the media who dared to disparage his friend Jeremiah Wright – landed him in the national spotlight.

Pfleger’s moment of infamy finally arrived last week. While putting in a guest appearance at Trinity United Church of Christ, led until his recent retirement by Rev. Wright, Pfleger struck up a familiar theme: railing against alleged white racism, personified, in this instance, by Hillary Clinton. Purporting to expose “white entitlement and supremacy wherever it raises its head,” Pfleger claimed to see it in Clinton’s stymied campaign:

“I really believe that she just always thought, 'This is mine! I'm Bill's wife, I'm white, and this is mine! I just gotta get up and step into the plate.' And then out of nowhere came, 'Hey, I'm Barack Obama,' and she said, 'Oh, damn! Where did you come from? I'm white! I'm entitled! There's a black man stealing my show!’”

Sensing that he had gone too far, Pfleger tried to step back from the brink. “Sorry,” he said, “don’t want to get you into any more trouble.”

By then, of course, it was too late.

Why The Degeneracy Zealots Attack The Boy Scouts

From my response to Robert Knight's "Media Shove Boy Scout Story Under a Tent":

"If gay men want to start their own "gay scouts" or "glbt scouts" or whatever variant they want, then they should do so. It's a free country."

Problem is, just like the push to radically redefine what marriage has always meant, the radical degeneracy zealots aren't actually about tolerance or equality.
Otherwise, they would be satisfied with terms like homosexual union or same sex partnership and they would just go start their own 'homo scouts' or 'deviant scouts' or 'glbt scouts'...

But no! Ain't enough to just go do their own thing for a very important reason and that is this:

It is about "Subvert the dominant paradigm" and 'Bring it all down man!"

Not equality or civil rights or any other such noble thing.
It is about subversion, and some of their own most outspoken crusaders have even admitted as much.
Destruction of established order.
Tearing down without what cannot be reconciled within the disordered mind of the deviant.
It's what sociopaths do.

'Environmentalism' Has Become an Enemy of The Environment

From my response to Charles Krauthammer's
"Environmentalists Pick Up Where Communists Left Off"
http://www.townhall.com/columnists/CharlesKrauthammer/2008/05/31/environmentalists_pick_up_where_communists_left_off?page=full&comments=true

'Environmentalism' has become an enemy of the environment because it is not about the environment any more, if it ever even was. It's about money and power over other people's lives, just as we have come to expect from the... forceful left.
I submit that I and most conservatives I know love the environment more than any hundred phony radical knee jerk enviros. We are conservationists after all.
And I've also planted around half a million trees with my own hands which took 5 long seasons of such hard work that only about 1 in 50 who tried it could last more than 2 weeks.
Can even one of these self righteous zealots tell us where human inputs rate relative to the other barely known inputs like volcanism, plant degradation, insect life, animal life, solar cycles, cosmic rays and ocean dynamics? Not one? Imagine that. So where does that leave them? Hysterical.
Let us welcome and even encourage more practical and elegant technologies by which we can eventually move beyond the oil age. The biosphere must not be seen as absolutely incorruptible.
But let us not bow down to the hysterical left and their 'forceful' inclinations.
Especially when any cursory investigation reveals just to what degree they tend to twist and pervert and ruin whatever they touch. It's only the nature of the beast after all.

...And a few numbers (unconfirmed) from another's comments:

Humans currently release 5.5 gigatons (GT) of C02 into the atmosphere
annually from energy consumption.
That compares with:
750 GT that are already there,
1000 GT in the surface ocean,
2200 GT in the biosphere, and
38,000 GT in the deep ocean.
Transport between these various reservoirs ranges from 50 to 100 GT per year.
The size of these reservoirs and transports, and the uncertainty in their
measurements are such that it's not possible to determine where the recent
increase in CO2 comes from, nor is it reasonably possible to do anything
about it.

And this:

If rabid environmentalists didn't want to be called communists, they should not have celebrated the first Earth Day on Vladimir Lenin's 100th birthday. look it up...

Of course I want clean air, water, and land. However - the labelling of CO2 as a pollutant (rather than a natural byproduct of life, as lanczos pointed out in #29) forces us backward. Burning coal releases many pollutants, but the global-warming-alarmists would have us burn 30% more coal to deliver the same amount of electricity, and use the excess to sequester CO2. This releases MORE NOx, mercury, selenium, etc that has to be dealt with.

I like the way Krauthammer refers to the environmental alarmists as a church. They display the same tendancies as the worst of tyrants masquerading as holy men:
- flawed doctrine
- forced obedience to their rules
- punishment of heritics & critics
- Indulgences (carbon offsets)

Time to start another reformation...

Czech President’s “Inconvenient Challenge” to Al Gore

Czech President’s “Inconvenient Challenge” to Al Gore

By: Christopher G. Adamo

Since leaving office, former Vice-President Al Gore has gained enormous stature within certain circles on the world scene, acquiring it per the standard liberal formula. Taking up his “Earth in the Balance” cause, he produced the feature length movie “An Inconvenient Truth,” which is replete with fantastic prophesies of doom for the planet unless America immediately regresses to third-world squalor.

An insipid and unsubstantiated piece of propaganda, Gore’s movie would never have resonated beyond the boundaries of a few egg headed film fests, were it not for the concerted efforts of virtually every liberal and socialist special interest known to mankind. Coming to his aid, they collectively proclaimed “An Inconvenient Truth” to be at once the scientific equivalent of Einstein’s theory of relativity, packaged in cinematic genius that eclipses Ben Hur.

In the typical modus operandi of liberalism, an avalanche of recognition and awards were conferred upon Gore and his movie, from the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize to an Oscar for “Best Documentary” to effusive accolades from every aspiring tinseltown movie critic. The film, along with all of his efforts to foment a global warming panic, have since been predictably declared as universal truth, a judgment based not on the availability of evidence, but on the profusion of like-minded liberal ideologues who are willing to accept and advance his hysterical claims.

Why The Surge is Working... And Why We Are There

Adapted from one of my many entries from a different forum I post on:

...Of course a smile can hide fangs and it sometimes does.
But not always.
A big reason such progress has been made lately is because of many more common Iraqis coming forward to help flush out the bad guys.
A big reason that has happened is because we have let them come to really know us, by going into these neighborhoods and being with them.
Toys and candy and hygiene items and playing with the children... and working with the adults making friends all leads to this very thing.
Friends.
Not in all cases. But we don't need all cases.
Once a critical mass is reached, the bad guys can no longer get a foothold.
Because our new friends are flushing them out.

Through being with them and more a part of their lives, the Iraqis get quite a different picture than that which has always been painted for them by the bad guys and the greater aid and comfort media.

If you think taking the fight, (that which the bad guys have declared upon you and the Iraqis and the whole free world) to them on their chosen turf is not 'for the better', then we welcome any historically validated 'better' ideas.
Till then, I consider it better to take a stand, now.

For the sake of our women and children and homeland.
And for the sake of the free world.
We stand against darkness and tyranny.
Because we are America.
The light and the hope of this world.
The land of the free.

Memo To A Good Man

Senator McCain. John my friend... Listen up.

Great Westerns

Great Westerns

"Western heroes are often local lawmen or enforcement officers, ranchers, army officers, cowboys, territorial marshals, or a skilled, fast-draw gunfighter. They are normally masculine persons of integrity and principle - courageous, moral, tough, solid and self-sufficient, maverick characters (often with trusty sidekicks), possessing an independent and honorable attitude (but often characterized as slow-talking). The Western hero could usually stand alone and face danger on his own, against the forces of lawlessness (outlaws or other antagonists), with an expert display of his physical skills (roping, gun-play, horse-handling, pioneering abilities, etc.)."

Iraq Rising

By Jacob Laksin
FrontPageMagazine.com | Tuesday, May 27, 2008

A fascinating scene
played out in Basra, Iraq, last week. Troops from the Iraqi Army stood sentinel over the once restive city as followers of rogue cleric Muqtada al-Sadr muttered dispiritedly that they had been driven from power. In this Sadrist fiefdom, the erstwhile epicenter of a Shiite insurgency that many doubted could be contained, the Iraqi army was now law...

An open Letter From Ben Stein to Our Troops.

An Open Letter from Ben Stein

02/02/2007

Dear Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, National Guard, Reservists, in Iraq, in the Middle East theater, in Afghanistan, in the area near Afghanistan, in any base anywhere in the world, and your families:

Let me tell you about why you guys own about 90 percent of the backbone in the whole world right now and should be happy with yourselves and proud of whom you are.

It was a dazzlingly hot day here in Rancho Mirage today. I did small errands like going to the bank to pay my mortgage, finding a new bed at a price I can afford, practicing driving with my new 5 wood, paying bills for about two hours. I spoke for a long time to a woman who is going through a nasty child custody fight. I got e-mails from a woman who was fired today from her job for not paying attention. I read about multi-billion-dollar mergers in Europe, Asia, and the Mideast. I noticed how overweight I am, for the millionth time. In other words, I did a lot of nothing.

Like every other American who is not in the armed forces family, I basically just rearranged the deck chairs on the Titanic in my trivial, self-important, meaningless way.

Above all, I talked to a friend of more than forty-three years who told me he thought his life had no meaning because all he did was count his money. And, friends in the armed forces, this is the story of all of America today. We are doing nothing but treading water while you guys carry on the life or death struggle against worldwide militant Islamic terrorism. Our lives are about nothing: paying bills, going to humdrum jobs, waiting until we can go to sleep and then do it all again. Our most vivid issues are trivia compared with what you do every day, every minute, every second.

Oprah Winfrey talks a lot about “meaning” in life. For her, “meaning” is dieting and then having her photo on the cover of her magazine every single month (surely a new world record for egomania). This is not “meaning.”

Meaning is doing for others.

Meaning is risking your life for others.

Meaning is putting your bodies and families’ peace of mind on the line to defeat some of the most evil, sick killers the world has ever known.

Meaning is leaving the comfort of home to fight to make sure that there still will be a home for your family and for your nation and for free men and women everywhere.

Look, soldiers and Marines and sailors and airmen and Coast Guardsmen, there are six billion people in this world. The whole fate of this world turns on what you people, 1.4 million, more or less, do every day. The fate of mankind depends on what about 2/100 of one percent of the people in this world do every day and you are those people. And joining you is every policeman, fireman, and Emergency Medical Technician in the country, also holding back the tide of chaos.

Do you know how important you are? Do you know how indispensable you are? Do you know how humbly grateful any of us who has a head on his shoulders is to you? Do you know that if you never do another thing in your lives, you will always still be heroes? That we could live without Hollywood or Wall Street or the NFL, but we cannot live for a week without you?

We are on our knees to you and we bless and pray for you every moment.

And Oprah Winfrey, if she were a size two, would not have one millionth of your importance, and all of the Wall Street billionaires will never mean what the least of you do, and if Barry Bonds hits hundreds of home runs it would not mean as much as you going on one patrol or driving one truck to the Baghdad airport.

You are everything to us, as we go through our little days, and you are in the prayers of the nation and of every decent man and woman on the planet. That’s who you are and what you mean. I hope you know that.

Love,

Ben Stein

Patrick P. sends this photo - probably one of the most powerful images that I've ever seen - which he found at AirWarriors via the Marine Corps League (Baltimore):

John Gebhardt's wife, Mindy, said that this little girl's entire family was executed. The insurgents intended to execute the little girl also, and shot her in the head...but they failed to kill her. She was cared for in John's hospital and is healing up, but continues to cry and moan. The nurses said John is the only one who seems to calm her down, so John has spent the last four nights holding her while they both slept in a chair. The girl is coming along with her healing.

He is a real Star of the war, and represen ts what America is trying to do.

This, my friends, is worth sharing with the WORLD! Go for it!! You'll never see things like this in the news. Please keep this going. Nothing will happen if you don't, but the American public ne eds to see pictures like this and needs to realize that what we're doing over there is making a difference. Even if it is just one little girl at a time.

m 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing sent in an additional photo of Chief Gebhardt and the Iraqi child that he has taken under his care. Heartwarming stuff. Dont let anyone tell you that we're not making a difference over there.

The baby girl was orphaned after terrorists killed family. Terrorists wanted to finish the job, so they shot the poor girl in her head. Fortunately a coalition medical unit was able to save her.

That's the war we're fighting in a nutshell. The enemy seeks to destroy innocent life, we protect and preserve it.

The New Slavemasters, My response to Michael Reagan's "Victim Card" OP

BHOy in the man suit...
What a caricature of cowardice, malignant narcissism and acute, malevolent, sociopathological compulsion you and your Mother of Cynical Bitchinghood have shown yourselves to be. How's that. Some evil, evil symbiote entity must reside within you. This is the Sorcerer Soros' handiwork, isn't it?
It's worse than that? Even he is but a tool?

This whole sad spectacle is doing more to expose the vile, bitter fruit of the Illiberal Church of Perpetual Victimhood than ANYTHING before it. And God bless you for that at least. When you spoke of uniting and healing... you had not the slightest idea how right you would turn out to be. YOU have engendered more hatred for black racism toward whites than ANYONE here before you. YOU are the new slavemaster wannabes that give Faracon and Sharpton a run for their... our money. An enslavement of YOUR OWN that is far more insidious and evil than ANY this nation has ever been home to. A spiritual enslavement that towers above all others. Poison unprecedented, at least in the modern civilized world, and only the Imams of the dark-ages death-cult jihadi savages outdo you therewith. Oh... There's an alliance? Nation of Islam indeed. What a surprise. Black "Liberation" Theology?! What a sick joke THAT is. What hypocrisy, bigotry, hatred and ENSLAVEMENT you have become the new poster children for. You have become what you claim to hate. Submit this! Now let the real healing begin. God bless us all.
